General Adult Psychiatry 

- Description:
We offer a 2-6 weeks placement within the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health Research under the Supervision of Dr Allys Guerandel (Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Tutor). This will be in General Adult Community-based Psychiatry and observation of liaison services and on-call in a busy A&E Department. 
There will also be opportunities to get insight in the management of patients with common general adult psychiatric disorders, as well as eating disorders, research in mental health and medical education. 
Exchangee will have the opportunity to attend in-service academic teaching programme. Please consult the Department page on the Hospital website for further Information.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry 

- Description:
This attachment would offer opportunities to experience community-based Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. This would include exposure to multidisciplinary teamwork and referral process, basic assessment, journal club with trainees and exposure to professional training courses/ medical student teaching sessions.
In addition, there are opportunities in Consultation Liaison Psychiatry at Our Ladies Hospital for Children. Learning experiences here would include multidisciplinary work, interaction with interdisciplinary colleague, exposure to acute presentations in the emergency department and to the mental health needs of children with chronic illnesses.

Intellectual Disability 

- Description:
Opportunities exist for a 2- 6 week placement in Learning Disability at St. Vincent’s. The Centre is now home to 96 residential service users ranging from 7 – 70 years of age,  all living in purpose built bungalows. There is also a respite facility, which caters for the needs of approximately 40 service users with varying levels of disability. 
This provides short breaks to families and their carers.
Services to over 350 service users on a daily basis. Trainees would gain exposure  to the range of day and residential services offered, the multidisciplinary nature of the team and to the specific mental health needs of individuals with Intellectual disability. Additionally there are opportunities to attend other day centres in Dublin area, out-patient clinics or joint-clinic with service physician  for individuals with co-morbid epilepsy.

Ideally trainees would already have completed 1-2 years of training in psychiatry prior to this placement. Preference will be given to trainees who intend to train in this area or who are considering this. 


Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

- Description:
This placement provides a mixture of community-based and in-patient Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). There are 3 community teams (West, North, South) covering different catchments areas in Galway. All involve a multidisciplinary team (MDT). Placement will involve being immersed in a one of the teams and chance to get exposure and be attached to different MDT members. If trainee is interested, it might be possible to liaise with other teams if there are particular areas of interest.Trainee can get involved in joining general clinics, Occupational Therapy  assessments, Speech & Language assessments, Diagnostic and therapeutic groups. More specific clinics include ADHD clinics and  ASD diagnostic assessments.  Galway hosts a one of the four national CAMHS in-patient units in Ireland, and the only one that offers Dialectical Behavioural Therapy in the
country. It is possible to arrange for a period of placement in the inpatient unit if interest 
is expressed on application.

Intellectual Disability

- Description:
Brothers of Charity Galway is an NGO funded by the Health Services Executive (HSE) to deliver social, residential, rehabilitative and mental health care to individuals with Learning Disability diagnosis in the West of Ireland. The mental health care involves providing outpatient clinics in a number of locations in Counties Galway and Roscommon as well as regular reviews for service users in community-based residential settings and group homes. The clinical services are run by a Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychiatry of Learning Disability and 2 registrar. The mental health input is supported by multidisciplinary staff including clinical psychologists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and social workers. 
The mental health team has access to admission in the local psychiatric unit in 
University Hospital Galway if needed. Visiting trainee can get involved in a variety of clinical activities including attendance of out-patient clinics and multidisciplinary team meetings, assessment and interventions.
